"See me in your eye"

May 16 - 18 / 7:30PM
Laguardia Performing Arts Center

Spring_Studios_2019_Baranova-3638.jpg

We were honored to be a 2019 BAC Space Resident. The residency is a curated month-long residency for 5 artists from different disciplines. There were 5 unique artists for this season--3 diverse choreographers, 1 playwright, and 1 opera performance artist.

We recently finished this dream-of-a-residency where we were able to make progress on "See me in your eye / An American and Tunisian Collaboration." We were in the beautiful Cunningham-Cage Studio, and we even got to interact with Mikhail Baryshnikov, himself! We worked with a partial cast, including 3 of our dancers from Tunisia in this amazing space. On April 19th the rest of our cast arrives and we look forward to continuing the work from there!

Schoen Movement Company partners with artists from Tunisia in an evening-length dance performance. Using recorded audio stories and original music compositions, the cross-cultural group elevates diverse life experiences to illustrate shared humanity and promote a universal sense of belonging.

"See me in your eye" was developed in part during a residency at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, New York, NY. It is also made possible in part by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

After an 8-month process, we have secured visas for all 5 of our Tunisian collaborators to come to New York this Spring! That means Kais, Cyrinne, Houcem, Dali and Monam will all be joining us for a great season working up to performances at Laguardia Performing Arts Center!

See below all of the exciting events happening between now and the performance.

Visas, a Serious Business

A fundamental part of this project was securing visas for our international guests. It was about as fun as it sounds (read: not at all).

We made a comic about our experience in hopes that you'll chuckle, too.

Just Released! Our new video series: The Table Project. The Table Project is the pedestrian extension of our piece, "Every Day: A Duet." As in the dance, The Table Project brings two people together across our teal table, to reconnect face-to-face no matter their age. Check it out!

Last year around this time, we were dancing and creating in Tunisia, in a project that marks a turning point in the priorities of Schoen Movement Company. We've always been interested in using dance as a vehicle to bring people together, but Tunisia dilated that notion to an international scale.

Since then we've been making plans to bring our collaboration to the US and we are a big step closer to making that happen.

A few weeks ago we received notice from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that our petition for artist visas was approved! There are still a few steps left to secure visas for our friends abroad, but the hardest part is behind us.

SMC performed at the Making Moves Dance Festival 2018 at Jamaica Center for Arts on September 22nd. It was such a beautiful space to continue our performances of “Every Day: A Duet”.

With support from the US Embassy in Tunis, Dance Motion USA / Brooklyn Academy of Music, American Dance Abroad and our local community, Schoen Movement Company held residence in Tunis, Tunisia September 30 - October 15th 2017.  The company taught daily professional classes through local partner, L’association Hayyou’Raqs, and collaborate with a small cast of local dancers on a new piece.

All of the local dancers are ones who Emily met during her tour to Tunisia with Keigwin + Company / Dance Motion USA in March.

Our performance in Tunisia was broadcasted via Livestream.com all over the world thanks to DanceMotionUSA/BAM! This collaboration with Schoen Movement Company and local Tunisian professionals has been remarkable.

On Saturday, Sept 9th, Brandon Cournay and Emily Schoen performed a quirky little duet "Robotic Love" at Joe's Pub / DanceNOW.

Meet the festival host, Deb Lohse "TruDee"!

In August, Emily Schoen went back to her hometown in Wisconsin to teach at Accent on Dance Studios. She had a blast contributing to the community where she grew up dancing!

Schoen Movement Company rep went all the way to Iowa in July for the Open Doors Dance Festival, where we presented an evening of duets with much joy, and spent the remainder of the week teaching and creating with students. Check out a clip below (which includes snippets of the duet we created live on stage).

In May, Schoen Movement Company went to Houston where we created a new work for METdance. The piece "the grounding place." features an original score by Glen Fittin and costume design by Márion Talán of Juilliard.

On December 14th, Schoen Movement Company presented an evening of dance performance at the iconic Brooklyn Brewery. The evening featured guest companies LoudHoundMovement and B.S Movement. Check out our video highlights of the evening below, as well as Dance Magazine's nice review.

It was a true Brooklyn party, just with better dancing.

Emily Schoen was named an Artist-In-Residence for the Jamaica Center for the Arts and Learning for Fall 2016! The residency is awarded through Exploring the Metropolis and is supported by the Mertz Gilmore Foundation, among others. It supports the creation of a new work in an underutilized space. Check out highlights of our new piece "Thou Mayest," inspired by John Steinbeck's book, East of Eden.

For the month of August, Schoen Movement Company was in residence at Mid-Pacific in Honolulu, creating a new piece on the students. Dancing in paradise and squeezing in beach time. Aloha!

On July 27th, we returned to Jacob's Pillow Inside/Out to premiere a dance titled "Man, Woman, and Violin" in the mixed bill evening, "Dances for Two." Tyler Philips and Emily Schoen collaborated with Concertmaster of Les Mis on Broadway, Maria Kistner Conti, in a duet for three.

In May, we produced our first performance evening in NYC. Titled, "Big Dance in Small Spaces," it integrated an evening of dance into an evening out. Featuring dance vignettes sprinkled around a brewery, frequent drink breaks, and a pop-up food vendor, it was quite the Happy hour. Forgive the pun :)
